Art Thunderonthegulf Craft: A Celebration of Creativity, Culture, and Community

While people are seeking those one-of-a-kind experiences combining art and craft, they are also looking for more than just an event – they’re seeking a lively union of artists, crafters, and communities. This festival, known for its energetic environment and amazing display of art, reflects the impact that artistic expression and the coast can have on one another. Whether you are a lover of arts, a lover of arts, or looking for inspiration, art craft delivers something quite special.

The Origins of Art Thunderonthegulf Craft

The art craft festival thunderonthegulf originally started as a regional celebration highlighting local creativity and early on began attracting nationwide attention. Artists and crafters come from all over to partake, contributing with handmade pieces that represent creativity, tradition and the artist’s own tale. The event was born out of a passion to support craftsmanship and provide guests with an experience filled with coastal soul and artful diversity.

What is Art Thunderonthegulf Crafts? History and Evolution

Art Thunderonthegulf craft is a celebration where people come together to make handmade crafts. The event was launched in 1997 by a small group of local artists who met to show and sell their creations inspired by the coastline.

Started by 15 artisans in a beachfront park, the event has turned into a major cultural festival that hosts more than 25,000 visitors annually. People from all over the planet descend to take part in the festival and the action-packed power races. The vibrations and happy feel at this place are UNFORGETTABLE.

This festival runs for three days in the first weekend of October and celebrates the beautiful fall weather of the Gulf Coast -warm days, cool nights and clear skies. This conveniently coincides with the passage of monarch butterflies up the coast, giving an all-natural flourish to the event.

Known for its local music, freshest seafood ever, and most importantly, a gathering with over 200 artists and craftspeople awaiting with the most unique pieces imaginable, ranging from delicate seashell jewelry to grand driftwood sculptures. ## *Visitors will enjoy the sounds of live local musicians, the smell of fresh seafood, and more than anything else, the chance to meet and speak with some of the area’s many local artists, who will be on hand displaying their various wares for sale; wares as small and delicate as seashell jewelry and sculptures made from driftwood.

Live demonstrations and workshops by many artists, providing an opportunity to see how various crafts are produced. Adults are welcome to have a go at making something too! My kids look forward to it every year and arealways learn something new.

Handmade Art ThunderOnTheGulf Crafts

A walk through the festival grounds is like entering into a creative coastal wonderland. Artists display their booths in serpentine walkways that wind around palm trees and along the shore. This allows patrons to walk the aisles of booths full of one-of-a-kind items.

The range of those homemade items is seriously something you will never see anywhere else. A treasure trove of finds: practical objects in the present day and decorative objects from yesteryear that clearly represent the coastal way of life. And in this section, I am going to be posting some of my favorite craft categories that you can find.

Handmade Art ThunderOnTheGulf Crafts

Sea Inspired Jewellery

The caliber of jewelry artists featured at this show is really amazing and a lot of them actually use sea glass they’ve gathered from the beaches of the Gulf. Now this is an awesome way to bring the beach and clean it up and turn it into something so beautiful.

I bought some tiny blue sea glass earrings wrapped in silver wire last year, and they catch the light like the Gulf on a sunny day.

There are other jewelry makers that work with shells, pearls, or even with tiny, preserved starfish. There were some pretty one-of-a-kind items that I never, ever saw and they go from casual beach-style ankle bracelets to high end statement necklaces for special events.

Pottery and Ceramics

I am always drawn to the pottery section with its earthy colors and practical beauty. All of these local clay artists produce everything from coffee mugs with wave designs to large serving platters shaped like fish or stingrays. You can even make yourself one and take it home with you to remember it.

There was this one artist who makes these beautiful ceramic wind bells that are glazed in beautiful hues of blue and green that recall the Gulf waters. They make the most delicate, tinkly sound when the ocean wind moves through, and I got like three of them over the years that I visited it.

The most popular technique is to actually fire the pottery in sand.; burying their pots in beach sand and firing them right there, creates these unique patterns and colors.

Local Palm and Driftwood sculptures woodwork

The woodworkers demonstrate incredible creativity in making art out of driftwood. When you have strolled your way through this part you will have seen pieces from tiny carved dolphins to 5 ft standing Herons, which is quite incredible for time consuming for these sort of pieces.

Native palm wood, which has a striking grain pattern, is transformed into handsome bowls and serving platters. My husband couldn’t resist a cutting board made from palm felled by a storm, with an adorable little carved sea turtle in one corner.

Other craftsmen focus on more functional pieces, like Adirondack chairs fashioned from reclaimed boat wood and painted in cheery coastal hues.

Textile arts

The textile section is awash with bold bright colors and all inspired by life on the coast. There were these hand-dyed fabrics that had the blues and greens of the Gulf waters, and they tended to use natural dyes from native plants.

Quilts depict incredible photographs of pelicans, lighthouses and beach scenes. A woman who creates throw pillows by means of a technique called “fabric collage” and it’s layering bits of cloth on top of each other to create detailed images of sea life, that kind of stuff.

And listen up, when you go there, get this handwoven bag. There’s also no shortage of those hand-woven beach bags, and they’re just right for scooping up shells or taking towels down to the sand, beautiful and useful, yes?

Paintings and Mixed Media Art

The painting section feels like a gallery placed smack on the beach. Local artists are capturing Gulf Coast images in every possible medium here — from watercolors of swaying marsh grass in the breeze to oil prints of dramatic sunsets to acrylics of underwater scenes filled with colorful fish.

Mixed media artists produce very interesting works that meld painting and things they have found along the beach. An artist will add real sand to her paints to create texture on her beach scenes. Another weaves the smallest pieces of fishing net and driftwood into 3-D works.

My favorite is a local artist who makes small scenes inside actual seashells, little lighthouses and beach cottages that make you feel as though you are peering into a magic window.

Fused Glass Ornaments

About Thunderonthegulf: The glass artists at Thunderonthegulf create works that reflect light just as the Gulf of Mexico does! Just step inside their area and you will be met with a kaleidoscope of color and sparkle.

I’ve seen demonstrations of artists layering colored glass powders between sheets of glass and firing them in portable kilns. And when I saw what came out of them, I was amazed, because they were gorgeous suncatchers and ornaments that had wave patterns, fish, seahorses and starfish.

One artist has the most amazing night lights, with the top being a fused glass front and when it’s lit, it casts these shimmering blue-green patterns across the wall, and it’s just like being under water! It was too beautiful not to buy so we bought one for my daughter’s room last year.

Seashell Wind Chime Making

This is one of the most popular hands-on activities at the fest: For $15 you can choose from buckets of cleaned shells, sea glass, and pieces of driftwood and make your own, one-of-a-kind wind chime.

And you’re not in danger of making a mess because there are instructors who do help with the drill bits and the fishing lines and so on, but the creative decisions? Those are all up to you.

I remember making one with tiger shells and pieces of blue sea glass that still hangs on our porch and is just as beautiful and charming as ever.

The cool thing about these wind chimes is that they actually sound good, it doesn’t matter what you use to make a wind chime, this will sound great. And it is nothing like those bells you hear in business that just make noise. The wind chimes are softly melodic when the wind rustles through, and every time I hear them, I think of the day we spent at the festival.

Mason Jar Lantern Crafting

Again a craft break that is always popular with the mason jar lantern workshop. They work with blue and green glass paints, sea glass pieces and special adhesives to make this lantern. It’s really simple and you will see how to turn just any mason jar into a nice looking lantern that looks like it’s made of sea glass.

Illuminated with a small battery candle, these lanterns throw pools of beautiful patterns that replicate the way sunlight plays off the Gulf waters. You can do this even if you’re not artistic because my husband, who “can’t draw for shit” according to him, made one that he’s still pretty proud of.

The workshop leaders demonstrate different methods of making wave patterns, fish silhouettes and other coastal designs, so you can choose which one you want to follow for your own plaque.

Custom T-Shirt Designing

Custom T-Shirt Designing

For the kids and the young at heart, there is a t-shirt design tent that is always bustling, these are not your average tourist trap shirts as they are one of a kind custom designs.

Artists set up stations with stencils of local wildlife and coastal scenes, fabric paints in every conceivable shade of blue, green and sunset orange. And for $20 you can pick a t-shirt, tote bag or beach cover-up that you like and design one on your own with an expert’s help.

The gyotaku (fish printing) station is particularly well-received, and they stamp the rubber molds of fish and paint them to resemble actual specimens from the island.

Last year, my children stayed at least 45 minutes here, making matching shirts with prints of pelicans. They continue to wear them all the time and proudly inform others that they themselves MADE the jeans.

Seashell Powerboat Models

Crafts – Boat and Shell Art thunderonthegulf has the perfect mixture of two Gulf Coast loves– boats and collecting shells. Artisans fashion small boats and sails in shells and pieces of driftwood, among other organic materials.

Some models it creates look ridiculous but in a good way, like clamshell-shaped sailboats with toothpick masts and wee fabric sails, and the whole lot actually appear pretty neat when said and done.

Others are exquisitely detailed models of local fishing boats, down to the hull carved from driftwood and details as small as shells or sea glass.

There’s also a workshop where kids can build simple ones to take home and my son’s clamshell sailboat now has a place of honor on his bookshelf.

Marine Stamping Art

The stamping artists design lovely cards, prints, and gift wrap featuring hand-carved stamps of ocean critters and coastal plants. But what sets them apart, many are carved from beachcombing finds such as chunks of driftwood, thick stalks of seaweed, and even cuttlefish bones.

You can view the stamps in action with a video of the carving process, and then create your own prints, by yourself or with the help of Ocean’s stamps and beautiful water-based inks in oceanic colors. I made a set of note cards last year with a sea turtle, and when I sent them to friends, I received many compliments.

Some artists produce large-scale artwork by stamping and then repurposing individual stamps to form intricate underwater scenes or beach scenes.

Nautical Friendship Bracelets

We all had them – friendship bracelets! And on craft thunderonthegulf arts you can discover this workshop where they take the concept and add a coastal feel! Using waxed cotton cords in ocean tones, the students learn to make bracelets with designs that reference waves, fish scales and nautical knots.

The teachers are kind, taking the timid stuffmakers (myself included) through the same step-by-0step process. how to create beautiful patterns. My daughter and I enjoyed an hour’s worth of matching wave-patterned bracelets in blues and greens.

What makes these a little more special than that is the inclusion of small shell beads, sea glass chips, and tiny starfish charms. They are also waterproof, so you don’t need to worry about them getting destroyed by water, and they are great for using while out in the pool or on a boat. They are great souvenirs or gifts for friends back home.
